A major new development project is gaining momentum in San Antonio, centered around a proposed downtown stadium for the San Antonio Missions. More than just a ballpark, the project represents a broader vision for growth along the San Pedro Creek corridor and the continued evolution of the city’s urban core.

The stadium proposal is being led through a partnership between the Missions ownership group, Designated Bidders LLC, local developer Weston Urban, and the City of San Antonio. Together, the group is working toward creating a modern, multi-use destination that blends baseball, residential living, hospitality, and entertainment into one cohesive district.

Plans call for an approximately $160 million stadium with seating for around 4,500 fans, expandable for larger events. The proposed location along San Pedro Creek, between Camaron Street and North Flores Street, places the stadium within walking distance of downtown attractions while connecting it to one of the city’s most important revitalization efforts.

What sets this project apart is the scale of the surrounding development. In addition to the stadium, plans include residential towers, a hotel, retail space, and public gathering areas, with total investment potentially reaching hundreds of millions of dollars. The goal is to create a destination that remains active year-round, not just on game days, contributing to a more vibrant and connected downtown experience.

From a funding standpoint, the project is structured as a public-private partnership. The City of San Antonio has signaled strong support, with plans to utilize bond funding and reinvestment mechanisms tied to future economic growth in the area. The Missions ownership group and development partners are contributing significant private investment and have taken on responsibility for cost overruns, aligning incentives across both public and private stakeholders.

City leadership has already taken key steps forward, including initial approvals and design progress through review commissions. While final approvals and timelines are still being refined, the current target points toward a potential opening in 2028. The project also aligns with broader downtown initiatives, including San Pedro Creek improvements, UTSA expansion, and long-term plans for a more connected sports and entertainment district.

As with any major development, the proposal has generated conversation within the community. Some concerns have been raised around housing displacement and the use of public funding, particularly related to existing residential properties in the proposed footprint. At the same time, the project includes relocation support efforts and has been framed as an opportunity to bring new housing, infrastructure, and economic activity into the area.

Supporters point to the long-term benefits. A downtown stadium would make Missions games more accessible, increase foot traffic for nearby businesses, and help activate an area that continues to evolve. Similar projects in other cities have shown how ballparks can serve as anchors for sustained development, drawing visitors while supporting local restaurants, retail, and hospitality.

For fans, the vision is simple. A modern downtown ballpark would create a more immersive and connected experience, where attending a game becomes part of a larger outing that includes dining, entertainment, and exploration of the surrounding area. For the city, it represents another step toward building a downtown that is not only a destination for visitors, but a place where people live, work, and gather.

While the project is still moving through final stages of planning and approval, momentum continues to build. With strong backing, a clear vision, and the potential for meaningful impact, the proposed stadium reflects a growing confidence in San Antonio’s future. If realized, this development would not only provide a new home for the Missions but also help shape the next era of downtown San Antonio, one defined by connection, energy, and opportunity.
