Fiesta hats may shine in April, but they’re born in fall. October and November are when designers gather sequins, feathers, and fabric, sketching concepts and starting their bases.

At Día de los Muertos festivals, prototypes emerge including hats adorned with marigolds, papel picado, and skull motifs. Makers test reactions, refining ideas before Fiesta. Schools and nonprofits join in too, crafting smaller hats for art projects or fundraising auctions.

For many, these hats are stories told in color and texture — honoring veterans, celebrating heritage, or marking milestones. By December, dedicated designers are deep into projects, their visions already set on spring parades.
