CPS Energy has just greenlit a $175 million investment to construct 24.5 miles of high-voltage transmission line as part of the San Antonio South Reliability Project. This is Phase One of a broader effort that will total over $329 million, designed to solve grid bottlenecks and keep the lights on through 2027 and beyond.
This upgrade stems from the near-catastrophic grid emergency on September 6, 2023, when overloaded lines threatened statewide power loss. It served as a wake-up call to reinforce our infrastructure.

A double-circuit 345 kV line running roughly 50 miles from Howard Road substation through Bexar and Atascosa Counties to San Miguel.
CPS Energy will build the northern segment, while South Texas Electric Cooperative handles the southern stretch.
Additional work includes three rebuilt 345 kV segments, new 138 kV lines, and a third transformer at Howard Road.
Once energized—targeted for June 2027—CPS is eligible for state funding reimbursement.
