🛤 The Big Picture

CPS Energy has just greenlit a $175 million investment to construct 24.5 miles of high-voltage transmission line as part of the San Antonio South Reliability Project. This is Phase One of a broader effort that will total over $329 million, designed to solve grid bottlenecks and keep the lights on through 2027 and beyond.

This upgrade stems from the near-catastrophic grid emergency on September 6, 2023, when overloaded lines threatened statewide power loss. It served as a wake-up call to reinforce our infrastructure.

📍 What’s Being Built

  • A double-circuit 345 kV line running roughly 50 miles from Howard Road substation through Bexar and Atascosa Counties to San Miguel.

  • CPS Energy will build the northern segment, while South Texas Electric Cooperative handles the southern stretch.

  • Additional work includes three rebuilt 345 kV segments, new 138 kV lines, and a third transformer at Howard Road.

Once energized—targeted for June 2027—CPS is eligible for state funding reimbursement.

⚙️ Why It Matters to San Antonio

  • Grid Resilience: These upgrades reduce congestion on key circuits that have historically carried too much power traffic—especially when wind farms in South Texas are feeding electricity northward.

  • Blackout Prevention: The enhancements are part of a statewide reliability initiative prompted by ERCOT, sidestepping repeated emergency shutdowns and aging plant dependency.

  • Proactive Design: This isn’t just emergency repair—it’s infrastructure planned for San Antonio’s next wave of growth and energy demand.

🧭 ESA Local Perspective

At ESA Local, we believe this is more than a utility update—it’s a commitment to community stability. When hurricane-warmed summers or winter cold snap crises hit, San Antonio will be safer because decisions like these were prioritized before power was lost.

It’s practical. It’s smart. And it’s forward-thinking—just like the city it serves.

🔁 Related Efforts Underway

  • CPS teamed with Modern Hydrogen to launch a pilot program converting natural gas to clean hydrogen—pairing grid resiliency with sustainability.

  • Its Vision 2027 initiative has added nearly 2,500 MW of new capacity (wind, solar, gas, energy storage) to power growth and climate goals.

  • Meanwhile, mobile generators are being deployed in San Antonio to support key substations and prevent outages before infrastructure is in place.

ESA Local Takeaway

San Antonio is betting on reliability and sustainability—not gamble. Whether you're one of nearly a million electricity customers here or simply planning for future growth, projects like this ensure energy keeps up with ambition.

Powering up our grid is powering our future—and we're glad to see CPS Energy setting that pace.
